A new NH Hotel for Hamburg

Spain’s NH Hotel Group has again concluded a contract with project developer GBI AG.

Berlin, 06 September 2018. The NH Hotel Group's is continuing its expansion course: The company has signed a contract for a new NH Hotel in Hamburg's Spaldingstrasse. The four-star NH Hamburg Zentrum was drafted jointly with Germany's largest hotel developer GBI AG and its Hamburg investment associate NORD PROJECT; the opening is expected in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The new full-service property in the centre of Hamburg will have 261 rooms. From there, guests can reach the most important and attractive points of interest on foot. The main railway station is just 850 metres away from the hotel. Sights and museums such as the Deichtorhallen, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg are in a walking radius. The rooftop bar with an impressive view over the city is already now considered to be a highlight.

Maarten Markus, Managing Director Northern Europe of the NH Hotel Group is delighted with the signing of the contract and the new hotel project in Hamburg: "We already have four hotels in this great Hanseatic city and with the fifth we are expanding our presence in northern Germany even further. Hamburg is a very important destination for us, a city where 6.8 million guests are booking around 14 million overnight stays annually".

Ascan Kókai, who as Senior Director Development & Asset Management belongs to the Global Development Team of the NH Hotel Group, points out: "Such an attractive hotel market is of course most encouraging for further investments. We prefer centrally located hotels. We are consolidating our portfolio with long-term contracts in successful markets". He stresses the value of the continued cooperation with GBI AG: "We have a very good business relationship with GBI. Thanks to the combination of outstanding hotel development expertise paired with our modern hotel concepts, we are achieving an ever stronger presence in Germany. I am delighted that we are opening another hotel together in mid-September, the NH Essen."

Jürgen Paul, Managing Director of NORD PROJECT: "The hotel in Spaldingstrasse will not merely be attractive for guests due to its excellent location but also because of its impressive architecture as a 10-storey high-rise hotel". The building is also extremely important for the development of the whole new urban quarter. To achieve this goal, Winking Froh Architects had chosen a very special approach and had been winning the design competition for the new hotel building at the beginning of the year. "We have designed the building as a structurally dominant head facing west towards the city centre. Thus, it forms an important visual axis into the city, towards the Kontorhaus quarter and the Spiegelinsel," says Prof. Bernhard Winking. And Frank Weitendorf, Managing Director of the architects' office, adds: "This boosts the urban upgrading of the City Süd. The new building defines the entrance to the inner city".

The commercial prospects for the project are also gexcellent. Jan Winterhoff, Director of Hotel Development at GBI AG explains: "Hotel stays in Hamburg are not least very popular with international guests, not least because of new attractions such as the Elbphilharmonie. As a result of this trend, occupancy rates in Hamburg have been already very high compared to other cities (by 0.9 per cent to 80.3 per cent), as was the average room rate (by 6.8 percent to 117.79 euros) as well as earnings per room (RevPar 94.63 euros, an increase of 7.8 per cent).

Jan Winterhoff praises the good cooperation with the City of Hamburg: "We work very well together with the Chief Planning Officer as well as with the entire administration and the political bodies of the city of Hamburg. As the largest hotel project developer in Germany, we are well able to judge that such constructive cooperation is not a matter of course everywhere". This good cooperation has paid off, especially in the competition for the design of the area arranged jointly with the city. Jan Winterhoff: "Otherwise there wouldn't have been such a first-rate result for the city and the guests of Hamburg".
